IWMD 2023 Campaign To Light Up In Purple Landmarks In North West A Success

Last year saw the beginning of the campaign by the IWMD organisers made up of MAVs and CWU representatives, in Liverpool the lighting up of the iconic Liverpool Royal Liver Building in the colour purple to commemorate all those who have lost their lives at work.

Once again this year, John Flanagan, MAVS (Merseyside Asbestos Victims Support Group) and Jamie McGovern, (CWU) Grter Mersey Amal, wrote to local officials as part of their IWMD 2023 event campaign on Merseyside proposing that ALL iconic buildings on Merseyside are also lit up in the same way.

As he did last year North West Regional Secretary, Carl Webb, Mark Holt CWU NW H&S Lead, and others approached their local organisations; requesting again for the lighting up in purple of their buildings.

The campaign has grown momentum this year, with more buildings across the North West being added to the list of those marking IWMD2023 with people lighting of iconic buildings.

The full list supplied by Carl Webb shows the extent to which the North West supports International Worker's Memorial Day:

Blackpool Tower
Georges Dock Building
Manchester Library
Mersey Gateway Bridge
Port Liverpool Building
Steve Prescott Bridge
St Georges Hall
Cunard Building
Town Halls
Birkenhead
Blackburn
Bolton
Burnley
Bury
Dukinfield
Leigh
Tameside
Wallasey
Wigan

Whilst it is unfortunate that the owners of the Liver Buildings at Liverpool's Pier Head have not as yet lit up the building on IWMD event days, the photo on the right is one of another day that the building was lit up in purple.

Unionsafety thanks those who posted photos of their local buildings lit up on the evening of 28th April on social media, and those sent direct to unionsafety.

Here is a collage of events and buildings that supported IWMD2023 by lighting up their buildings:
